Half the nation, including smokers, support completely banning cigarettes within 10 years, a study has found.

The 2008 Health and Lifestyles Survey compiled nationwide interviews from the Health Sponsorship Council of 1608 people, including 422 smokers, and has just been published in the NZ Medical Journal.

It found 49.8 per cent of people agreed cigarettes should no longer be sold in New Zealand in 10 years, 30.3 per cent disagreed and 19.9 per cent neither agreed nor disagreed. Of the smokers surveyed, 26.2 per cent agreed and 55.3 per cent disagreed. The study also showed public support for plain, unbranded cigarette packets and fewer tobacco retailers.

Pacific Islanders, in particular, showed strong support for the measures.

One of the study’s authors, Dr George Thomson, from Otago University, Wellington, called on the Government to take action.

Two souls needing to see the light through the trees

Hi Motherbear and all Forum users

My husband and I are currently in NZ on a one year work visa and we would love to apply for residency but we are getting many mixed messages from people as to what course of action to take. My husband is a trained electrician, which is on the Long Term Skilled Shortage List, and he has 4 years of experience. Our question is do we need to get a job offer from an accredited company or can we submit an EOI without one? Also, some people have advised us you can do a conversion course to become NZ registered, is this correct, and does anyone know who we contact, or how we go about this?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Kind Regards - Two confused souls

Auckland: where to live?

Friday, January 29th, 2010
Hi, I’ve been looking through previous posts but have been unable to find a thread similar to mine.
My question is this: my mother and I have just recently been granted a PR for New Zealand and are looking to settle in Auckland. My step-father will be joining us in the next 4 to 5 months, but we need somewhere to live in the meantime where it would be relatively safe for my mother and I to be living alone. We would prefer a suburb where flats are cheap to moderately priced (I know it’s a bit of a reach) and also one where there are decent schools. I’ve been suggested suburbs like Mt. Albert and Mt. Eden. Any help? Thank you in advance. :)

What happens if you loose your job?

Friday, January 29th, 2010
I was wondering, let’s say a that someone finds a job in NZ, gets a work visa, moves to NZ, starts working and after 2 months he/she looses his/her job due to the recession or whatever. What happens??? I mean – You still have your visa but, are they going to kick you out of the country or can you try to find another job? And how long can you be there without a job, while you are looking for another one?
Does anyone know the answer? What happens if you loose your job?

Urgent Request: Best Currency Exchange in City Centre-Auckland

Friday, January 29th, 2010
Hi
We have arrived to Auckland last night and we forgot to do exchange our money from USD to NZD. Now we stay in Park Road st.
Does anyone can help me to find a nearest exchange office which the exchange rates are reasonable and not high? I read that at the airport exchanges are cheaper, but we missed it.

Thanks and regards,
Afsi
